A safety-based prioritisation of nuclear liabilities
The nuclear industry must decide its prioritisation of a ~£2.5 billion annual budget. We have collaborated closely with the Health and Safety Executive's Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) for over 4 years to develop a decision making methodology that aims to have significant impact on the evidence-base to establish future priorities at a strategic level. The Aston CRISIS Centre has also helped to develop the NII processes which have facilitated the input of significant contributions to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s prioritisation system which informs expenditure. These processes and the output of the NII methodology form some basic tools which are being used in part to inform the debate on the proposed work scopes used for Her Majesty’s Treasury’s Comprehensive Spending Reviews and provide a mechanism through which the NII can articulate its views on proposals. Collaboration is continuing on extension of the NII processes and methodology to provide a monitoring capability which could be used to measure progress with, and potentially assist in the management of the regulation of, the proposed work scopes.
